HOW TO STAY SANE AS A WORKING MUM

HOW TO STAY SANE AS A WORKING MUM

Are you a working mum? Do you struggle to keep up sometimes? I know the feeling! But there are steps you can take to make life a little easier.

We modern women want it all: a career, a family, friends, fitness . . . and why not? Life is for living and the more you put in, the more you get out.

It's a balancing act and I have to say that, at times, it's really hard. Just raising kids is stressful enough. Throw in running a business and life in general, and you can feel quite overwhelmed.

Through trial and error I've worked out a few tips to help me stay sane. And I thought I'd share them with you here.

Get Organised

This has to be the best advice of the lot! Having a system really is the best way to get things done and reduce stress. Keep a diary or schedule, and book everything in - including downtime.

Don't just say, I'll go to the gym on Tuesday, or catch up with a friend for coffee on Thursday - put it in the diary. By writing it down, and allotting it time, you will make it happen.

Whether you work from home, or in an office, keep your work space tidy and organised. Being surrounded by clutter is proven to make you feel stressed and agitated.

Ask For Help

I know, you want to do it all yourself, but be realistic. It's okay to ask for help. Share child-raising and household duties with your partner, and make use of childcare facilities. If family wants to help, let them.

There are only so many hours in the day so if you don't have the time to clean the house, hire someone. The same goes for the garden, or cleaning the car, or even doing the laundry. There are people out there whose business is to do that, so why not support them.

Say No To Guilt

We working mums have all been there! The guilt about not picking them up from school, or not making them a packed lunch. Guilt is a natural emotion but you need to curb it. The truth is, your children will survive!

In fact, it's good for them! A study by the Harvard Business School revealed that the daughters of working mums were generally better educated and earned more money, while the sons grew up to be more willing to help with childcare and chores.

Make Time For You

As a working mum, you do need to be protective of your time. It's okay to say 'no' sometimes. If you'd rather put on your PJs and watch a movie than go out for drinks, do it!

You should try and make time for yourself every day for something relaxing. Whether it's for an hour, or just 10 minutes, it gives you time to relax, de-stress and gather your thoughts. Go for a walk, book a massage, get your hair done - whatever works for you.

Reward Yourself

There's nothing wrong with a little self-bribery! If there's a task you've been putting off, get to it but promise yourself a reward.

It doesn't have to be expensive; it could be as simple as a good cup of coffee, or an aromatherapy bath. Or treat yourself to something special, like a new bag or a pair of shoes.

These are just a few ideas to help you stay sane as a working mum - enjoy!
